DAOS Overview
Bahn Networks' Digital Access Optimization System - DAOS is an
Ethernet-based DSL system, which provides traditional phone
service and high-speed Internet data services through telephone
pairs (local loops). It takes advantages of both Ethernet and DSL
technologies, enlarges the coverage of Ethernet, and makes Public
Ethernet (PEN) possible for today's operators and customers.
Architecturally, DAOS is an extended Ethernet, which uses POTS
twisted pairs, instead of CAT-5 cables as physical transmission
media, and its coverage can be as far as local loops can reach.
Not like traditional local area networks (LANs), the Public
Ethernet formed by DAOS, is a network that gives each user the
privacy and security as demanded by today's e-business. No user
can see other users in the PEN as default. It is also possible,
however, to group a few users, who are located in different areas
in a city, into a VLAN inside of the PEN. Eliminating ATM
mechanism as well as related expensive conversions and reverse
conversions between ATM and other protocols in the whole system,
DAOS gives service providers multiple benefits: more efficient,
high flexibility and capability, and easy management.
Data transmissions in DAOS system are, like in a normal
Ethernet, symmetric, i.e., both of downstream and upstream have
the same bandwidth. More than not, new broadband Internet services
demand as much bandwidth in upstream direction as in downstream
direction.
DASO is deployed in the telephone central office. The old phone
lines will be re-routed to connect to the DAOS system, then to the
CLASS-5 switch. Depending on the requirement, some Ethernet
up-links will be needed to connect the public Ethernet to the IP
backbone. In the user end, a DAOS-CPE (MODEM) is needed in order
to connect to the DAOS system.
A typical DAOS application is shown in Figure
-1.
